What is The Name of The Ice Cream Truck Song?

Ice cream truck songEvery summer we are asked this same question “What is the name of the song on your ice cream truck.”  It never fails.  Oh, if only we had a $20 bill (adjusted for inflation 🙂 ) for every time we were asked.  Several years ago, one customer actually called the local newspaper to get the song.  So as a result, this was written by The Ice Cream Wagon for you inquisitive souls.  For us though, the best part is when someone tells us that it reminds them of childhood.

Over the past 38 years, The Ice Cream Wagon has had a variety of songs as chimes.  None have survived this special one as it was chosen exclusively to be played by every Ice Cream Wagon truck.  It was chosen primarily for its melodic sound and catchy jingle.  Ironically, customers recognize our company trucks by their chime as they canvas the Denver streets and surrounding neighborhoods.

And now to answer your question.  The name of the song is Red Wing.  It was written in 1907 with music by Kerry Mills and lyrics by Thurland Chattaway.  Mills adapted the music from Robert Schuman’s composition for piano “The Happy Farmer, Returning From Work” from his 1848 work Album For The Young, Opus 68.  The song tells of a young Indian maiden’s loss of her brave who has died in battle.  It is most memorable for the chorus which is what is played by our trucks.

Now, the moon shines tonight on pretty Red Wing,–

The breeze is sighing,– the night bird’s crying,–

For afar ‘neath his star her brave is sleeping,–

While Red Wing’s weeping– her heart away.

And there you go.  You now have the name and the story behind the song played by The Ice Cream Wagon.  So next time you hear us, you can proudly tell your friends the name of the ever so infectious jingle.  Oh, and one last thing, don’t be surprised if you find yourself humming or whistling it when you least expect it.  Until then… chime on!

Do you want to add some excitement and novelty to your child’s birthday party, company picnic or any special event this year?  Consider having The Ice Cream Wagon cater your event with a truck, the jingle and some ice cream.  How cool would that be?  Way cool.  Visit us at Ice Cream Truck Catering and Special Events.
